A History
The home is a Queen Ann-style cottage constructed during the winter season of 1884-1885. It originally belonged to a shoe Merchant from Chicago, IL, Charles Willard Lapham. The structure is 6,000 square feet and initially housed three families. Over the years and decades, it has been a popular venue for weddings, funerals, and other gatherings. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1975, the only such designation in the city.
Today’s Museum
By 1972, the home was converted into a museum. The museum has more than 125,000 photographs and objects that portray the history of the city and county. By 1991, the staff added an exhibit space and meeting facilities. Lastly, a $3,500 package lets you bring up to 250 guests.
