When the big day arrives and it’s time for graduates to take their diplomas, you’ll want to keep your camera handy, so try these tips to take frame-worthy graduation pics.
Capture the Memories
Before the ceremony, take some time to snap a few graduation photos around campus. This could include a portrait in the cap and gown, and if you can’t find a spot that isn’t crowded, set the camera aperture wide to keep the graduate in focus and blur the background. Of course, the background can also be a significant part of the shot, so take some pictures around the places that meant a lot to the graduate, like the building where their major courses were, or their favorite quad hangout spot. Be sure to include the friends they’ve made, or even a professor that made a lasting impression.
Consider the Light
Heading outdoors to take photos on campus will ensure you have plenty of natural daylight, but you still have to pay attention to the details. If the graduate’s back is to the light source, their face and features won’t be highlighted as well, so make sure they’re facing toward the light for better results. If you’re indoors, you won’t necessarily need to turn on the camera’s flash, as windows and other sources can offer more subtle lighting. At the ceremony itself, you’ll also likely be too far away for the flash to reach the stage, so keep it off and save your battery.
The Hat Toss
At many schools, it’s a common sight to see students tossing their mortarboards into the air at the end of the graduation ceremony. It’s also a great pic to capture on the big day, but it can be a tricky shot to get right. There’s a lot of movement, so you might want to utilize the special settings of your camera to make timing the picture easier. If your camera has a burst mode or continuous photo option, use that to take a series of shots in quick succession. This will allow you to photograph the entire toss and pick the image you like best.
