Nothing gets Thomasville into the Christmas spirit like the annual Downtown Christmas Parade , so dress warm, grab a bag for candy and other freebies, and bring the whole family out to Broad and Smith to see the sights!
When and Where
This year’s parade will occur on Monday, December 2. Starting at 6:30 p.m., it will cover Broad Street and Smith Avenue and conclude at the Farmer’s Market.
Rock Around the Christmas Tree
The parade has a new float theme every year, and for 2019, downtown Thomasville will “Rock Around the Christmas Tree.” You can expect to see marching bands and festive floats, and each group will have to come up with decorations that suit the theme. Floats may play music, so you could hear a few holiday rock tunes in the air as they make their way through town. Keep an eye out for Santa Claus, who will follow at the end of the parade.
May the Best Float Win
Before the parade hits the road, judges will critique each float and interpretation of the Rock Around theme, and several cash prizes will be awarded to the top performers. The Christmas Spirit prize of $250 goes to the group with the best overall presentation. One runner-up will also receive a $150 prize. There will also be $100 prizes for best entry by Schools, Non-Profits/Civic Groups, Religious Organizations, and Businesses/Corporations. If you have a group or organization that would like to participate in the parade, you can register HERE . Entry is free.
Did You Know?
“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” was originally recorded in 1958 by Georgia native Brenda Lee. Despite the depth and fullness of her voice, Lee was only 13 years old at the time of its recording. While “Rockin’” would eventually become the best-selling song of Lee’s career, its popularity didn’t take off until two years after its release. The singer skyrocketed to fame in 1960 when she debuted the sad and slow country number, “I’m Sorry.” After that, her Christmas tune became a radio staple.
